I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…

“Amidst the Epoch of Ash, Satyrium and Bahran miners ventured to Geren’has and staggered into an old grot that spoke to them in a hushed tone, a draught that seduced the Sun Elves and Ek’Zahlni into its drear shadows. And delved from the cave’s nethermost region did they discover an unsullied gold that whispered into the ears of moths. The miners revealed that, when in one’s hand, this ‘Moth Gold’ would alter its form into any thought the wielder concocted in his brain. At that moment, avarice and paranoia tore the group asunder, dividing the two races to whelm the cave with blood, soaking the cobwebs of trembling spiders and slithering across the stony crags that hung from above. “Few escaped from the ghastly horror and few managed to obtain and conceal fragments of the Moth Gold.…

Monarch Butterfly and Habitat Loss Monarchs might as well be the most advantageous species on the planet considering they help with pollinating plants which produce our crops and provides a food source for birds and small reptiles. However, the number of monarchs is decreasing from habitat loss, climate change, chemical pollutants, poaching/farming, and public awareness. Herbicide is their biggest threat because it kills their main dish, which is milkweed. Remarkably, people from Science Daily have thought of asking state and local representatives to scale down of unnecessary mowing and herbicide application, promoting agricultural methods that doesn’t kill milkweeds and other plants that pollinators need, and plant milkweeds in areas that aren’t available. Monarchs do their job and now we should do ours.…
