One of the most stunning blue butterflies is the Ulysses Butterfly. Also known as the "blue mountain butterfly."
The Ulysses butterfly can live in most tropical rainforest areas such as Northern Queensland, Northern islands of Australia and Papua New Guinea. Its size differs depending on subspecies, although the wingspan is around 10.5 cm in Queensland.

The scientific name for Ulysses butterfly is the papilio butterfly. They are considered to be one of the most abstract butterflies and can be very difficult to take photographs of. I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…

One of the most fascinating creatures to me as a child was the monarch butterfly. Not only for its eye-catching wings that match the autumn leaves, but how they are the only butterfly that migrates south for the winter, similar to birds. Every year, millions make their journey from North America to Mexico or California, although those individual butterflies won’t return. Monarch migration is one of mother nature’s greatest phenomena. They migrate for two reasons: they cannot withstand the harsh, cold weather, and the larval food plants don’t grow in their winter habitats, so the spring generation migrates back north where plants grow.…

Gilbert placed together multiple species of Costa Rican Heliconius, a type of tropical butterfly, into an insectary at the University of Texas in Austin. He noted that these different species had, in fact, interbred with each other based on the observations that he had noticed. This included the swapping of wing color and patterns and even the occasional creation of a completely new pattern. This led to the discovery that more than 30% of these Heliconius species had created hybrids. More recently, in 2012, with the help of cheaper types of DNA sequencing, researchers were able to track all of the interbreeding of species.…
