Research Paper On Turtle Stranding

Decent Essays
It's an early start to turtle stranding season, but the first one was found and treated Monday.

The four pound, dinner plate-sized turtle was discovered in shallow water at Sandy Neck Beach Park in Barnstable. Staff from Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary responded and arranged for the young turtle to be taken to New England Aquarium's sea turtle hospital.

The first week of November is the normal start of sea turtle stranding season on Cape Cod. In an average year, Aquarium treats and rehabs about 90 live sea turtles rescued in November and December from the beaches of Cape Cod Bay. With the cold weather in 2014, a record 733 turtles were treated at the Aquarium and Mass Audubon recovered more 1250 dead and live turtles.

According to the article “Search for the Missing Sea Otters: An Ecological Detective Story” by Mary E. Allen and Mark L. Kuhlmann, the sea otter population has been decreasing at a rapid pace since the 1990’s in Aleutian, Alaska. This is demonstrated by article “What Could be the Cause of Decreasing Otter Numbers” which states that in 1997, the decline of the sea otter population had increased to about 90%. They hypothesize that the decrease in the sea otter population has been caused by their predator, the killer whale because the sea otter’s bodies do not come ashore. The evidence suggests that killer whales are eating the sea otters because in the text “What Predator Could be Causing the Large Decrease in Otter Numbers”…
