Youth Revive Trap Shooting The Trap Sho Trap shooting has changed tremendously since the 1800’s, from shooting live birds, to shooting fluorescent clay targets. The sport has grown so much since the beginning, but even more within the last ten years because of the youth that have changed it from a hobby to the fastest growing sport in the USA. According to USA Shooting, also known as the USA Olympic team, trap shooting began around the year 1825 with real pigeons and sparrows that were in traps or snares; shooters would ready up and call, “Pull,” to release the birds into the air and shoot them. Nearly six years later at the first conducted match, the first artificial target was introduced into the shooting world ("History of Shooting"). …show more content…
Back in 2012, our family could show up at the trap range almost any day of the week and be the only one shooting; the trap range was outdated, with worn wooden trap houses and small cracked walkways, but it still worked for 35 shooters on the team. Now, after five years of shooting, the Clinton County Sportsman Club now has a different team practicing on nearly every day of the week; North Scott’s trap team itself has nearly doubled in size reaching around 67 shooters, ranging from seventh to twelfth grade. Tony Kennedy, an outdoors reporter for Minnesota’s StarTribune, reports that trap shooting has turned into fastest growing sport in Minnesota, and is growing at even faster rates in Wisconsin. Last year, Wisconsin’s participation nearly doubled from 480 shooters and 24 teams (Kennedy). In Iowa, I don’t know a specific number of people, but the competition time has nearly doubled for amount of shooters that have joined. In 2013, the Iowa State Trap Shoot would last for two days, and end before dark, but in 2015 we shot for three days, and shot at night underneath the lights.
