Their Eyes Were Watching God Essay
In Zora Neale Hurtson’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, Janie sets out to discover her true love. Janie’s ideas about life and love are very unrealistic and fictional. Throughout this novel, she discovers the harsh realities of her imagination. She attempts to seek happiness and true love through three marriages, each of which provide her with very different views on life.
Janie’s first marriage was with a man named Logan Killicks. Initially, Janie’s grandma, Nanny, wanted to marry her to a man who could provide everything for her. When she first met him, she thought that he was only using her for her money, especially because he was younger than her and because she was the widow of the mayor which meant she had a lot of money. But once they started to get to know each other, she saw how thoughtful and caring Tea Cake was. Even after their marriage had lasted a long time, he was still treating her right. He treated her as equal, and not inferior to him, for example he taught her how to play checkers, he treated her with love and respect. Janie felt that Tea Cake was her first true love and was different from all of her other past husbands. However, their story didn’t end happily ever after. Tea Cake had gotten very sick because of rabies and the doctors couldn’t do anything. His health deteriorated to the point where he almost shot Janie. However, she reacted faster and was able to shoot him and save herself. He died with his teeth buried in his arm. “Tea Cake crumpled as his bullet buried itself in the joist over Janie’s head. Janie saw the look on his face and leaped forward as he crashed forward in her arms. She was trying to hover him as he closed his teeth in the flesh of her forearm.
