Research Paper On The Sumatran Orangutan

Decent Essays
Did you know the sumatran orangutan is one of the largest ape in the world. They are interesting but are very slowly becoming extinct in the wild. It is the only red ape in the world. It is the best ape at swinging underneath trees because of it's long arms. The sumatran orangutan is becoming extinct because of habitat loss, Palm oil plantations, Illegal hunting, and Illegal pet trade. Orangutans are being hunted because of their meat called bush meat. Another reason they are being poached is villagers will kill them to get fruit for themselves so they don't have to share with the orangutans. The villagers don't want to share with the orangutans because the orangutans are very big animals and eat a lot. The reason they are being poached

The lower primates include the prosimians lemurs, lorises, and tarsiers; which were the first primates in North America, Europe, and Asia. Lemurs now occur only on Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa. They are mostly tree-dwelling, nocturnal animals with a moist nose and a long furry tail. Lorises are slow-moving, tailless, and nocturnal and live in trees. They are found in Southeast Asia and Africa.…

100 years ago the number of orangutans were estimated to be around the 230,000, but now that number has dropped drastically. There are only thought to be 54,000 Bornean orangutans left, and 6,600 Sumatran orangutans remaining. Which makes a total of 60,600 orangutans left in existence. With the population suffering from a 75% drop in just 100 years, the rate of decline is unsustainable and the orangutans are in grave danger of ceasing to exist. This is all due to illegal poaching, trading, and land clearing in places where the orangutans use to run wild and free.…

The giraffe has the longest neck of all animals alive today. But the long neck of the giraffe must work with the circulatory system that brings blood to the brain. Since the brain of the giraffe is located so far away from the heart, the blood pressure the heart generates is approximately two times that of another animal with a similar weight. Due to the high blood pressure, the artery walls of the giraffe must be strong otherwise the giraffe would die of internal bleeding. The blood pressure, arterial wall strength and the length of the neck must all be in balance.…

It is November 18, 2016 at 1:00 pm and the sun is shining when me and my group enter the Birmingham zoo. My group consisted of Jasmine Williamson, Daniel Munger, and James Lowery. When entering the Primate house we started looking around and finding all the primates in the primate house and then choosing which ones each of us were doing. My hypothesis is whether there is specific behavior of non-human primates due to their size.…

This is a threat to primates and will cause their extinction because it takes around 10 to 20 years to replace them in the environment. Since they keep being hunted, they can’t really keep pace to replace their population with the amount humans are killing. Basically we are killing more than what are being reproduced (Primate Conservation and Clean Water lecture/video). 2. Why has bushmeat hunting shifted from subsistence to profit-driven business?…

Taking into account the two primates discussed on this project, we realize that their eating habits, though different, they feed on almost the same food. The gorillas feed on the plants just as the orangutans. Factors that affect their habitat is almost similar since we realize from my research that just as orangutans, the destruction of forests and excessive logging affects the lives of these gorillas. Those primates that live in the forest consider that their home and destruction of the same endangers their lives and well being together with the young…

Los Angeles Zoo Primates Our day at the zoo simply started with the objective of completing our visit, by seeing at least one each of the primates of each category around the zoo. That was quickly discarded considering that amount of information that the zoo provided for us about each individual creature. Because of the way that the zoo was structured we were unable to simply follow a particular order in which the animals were categorized. We visited all the different primates (as much as we could possibly see in our time there) and simply observed them each and photograph their actions behaviors and appearance along with potential eats and actives that may undergo on a daily base. Organizing the visits based on categories made it easier to structure and understand why it is that each type of primate belongs to that group.…
