The walking tour in the loop is strange and interesting for me. I have been in Chicago for three years, and I don’t even know what the loop is. Where is the location of the loop, and the only thing I know about the loop is from the Redline. I don’t have a lot of time when I was in high school. Every day I just go to school and do my homework. This walking tour gets me knew more about the city of Chicago where I have been living for three years.
I took this tour on Oct 11, afternoon. The weather is so good for walking not cold and not too hot, and it took me about two and half hours on this walking tour. None of the buildings get demolished, and I guess it already became a culture of the city, and people get used of it. In addition, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon is in progress and blocked the street. So I need to wait until the Marathon finished. The Marathon gave me a surprise. I knew there is Marathon going on every year, but I didn’t know is one of the most famous marathons in the world. The course has produced four world records, several national records, and countless personal bests. It started and ended at the Grant Park, also pass through 29 neighborhoods in the city of Chicago.

Whenever someone travels to a new location they may not realize how much history truly lies before them. Some students including myself would actually enjoy learning about the place they visit by taking a city tour and actually seeing all these sights instead of reading about it from a textbook in a boring classroom. For example, when I went on a family vacation a couple of years ago I learned more information about the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta than I would have ever learned in a classroom. The information that I obtained from the trip varied from how the city was built all those years ago to how much the people of the city truly do respect…

In Larson’s book The Devil in the White City, Larson portrays Jackson Park, the location of the Chicago World’s Fair, in different ways, based on the characters’ knowledge of the park. He uses three characters’ quotes and thoughts to give the reader an image of the park: Olmsted, Burnham, and the east coast architects. The image he gives the reader is never perfect, but the first impression he gives the reader is acceptable. At first, Larson describes Jackson Park as a place that may not have been extraordinary at the moment, but it had plenty of potential.…

You know, there’s so much that you can talk about in this world – trust me, I get told that I talk way too much and yet speak such little. But there’s one thing I really find interesting, and that would be journeys. They’re an ongoing paradigm that really makes you wonder about what sort of world we live in – they constantly challenge the whole ideals and quirks that we know about not just only ourselves, but also the world around us. Take Peter Goldsworthy’s book Maestro for example, it’s constant use of tasteful contrast and setting arouses the concept of growing up primarily through the unique themes of both music and the development of interpersonal relationships.…

When someone mentions the Great Chicago Fire most people just think of the cow that tipped over the oil lantern, but there was really a lot more to it. 18,000 wood buildings were destroyed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and 120 bodies were found but it is estimated that about 300 people died. There is a debate about whether or not the fire left a negative or positive impact in the long run. The negative effects were all the damage done to the city, the amount of people left homeless, and the people who lost their lives. The positive effects were the more secure city that was rebuilt after, the discoveries on materials that could make people safer, and the laws that would make people safer.…

My Artist’s Statement on Eric Edward Esper work, the 1977 CTA EL Train derailment the crash killed about 12 people and injured over 180 in that area of Chicago. In the painting I was looking at many people that were being oblivious to their surroundings. Therefore there were more causalities because they were not paying attention the streets and sidewalks still had snow on them, and in the scenery the cars are going the opposite direction from the crash. A closer look at the painting and you can spot the frantic people looking or trying desperately to get out of the train. “The Loop” not only refers to Chicago's central business district, but also a rectangular pattern formed by the city's elevated trains.…

Slowly and much to my surprise, things started to get better. By day six, I was an expert on navigating through the city. Each day on my walk back to Penn Station, I would take a new route, marveling at New York City’s array of tourists and commuters. After two months, I'm able to brag that I know exactly how many Starbucks cafes there are between 34th and 43rd streets and that Fifth Avenue hosts the best clothing shops.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

In the essay “Walking and the Suburbanized Psyche” by Rebecca Solnit, she believes walking was so valuable in the past because “walking was a sort of sacrament and a routine recreation”. People would walk frequently and voluntarily for their own pleasure like by making a date for a walk. Solnit narrates how “urban innovations such as sidewalks and sewers were improving cities” however it had “not yet menaced by twentieth-century speedups”. Solnit calls this period the, “golden age of walking” that initiated in the eighteenth century and she fears that it has “expired some decades ago”, yet its significance is the “creation of places to walk and its valuation of recreational walking”. Unfortunately, the development of suburbanization which…

I saw countless Ampelmann shops selling souvenirs with Ampelmann (and Ampelwoman, and Ampelgirl…you get the picture).…
