Would you be satisfied to be rich and without loved ones, or to be poor and with many loved ones? "The Gift of the Magi" is about a young couple, Della and Jim Dillingham. Initially, the couple attempted to get each other the best Christmas gifts ever. Even so, their gifts would be completely useless. According to Scientific American, "...romantic love must have common roots in our ancestry" (Hsu 49). Hsu wrote that stories that romance must be a part of our history. Furthermore, this is how the Dillinghams are so relatable. They only cared about each other, not their gifts. "The Gift of the Magi" by O'Henry, uncovers that the only gift that we all need in life, is each other. The best quality of humanity that is unveiled in "The Gift of the Magi" is how materialistic things don't matter. To begin with, this story concentrates on Della Young Dillingham. Della is determined to get an outstanding Christmas gift for her Jim. Jim and Della wanted to give each other a gift out of their love for each other.
