This was important to the North because it shifted the balance of representatives in Congress to their favor. After the US-Mexico war the territory of California was controlled by the military. The gold rush caused an increase in population by people from all over the country and even from foreign lands. Because so many people were there, a stronger local government was needed, as well as support from a federal government. California applied to be accepted to the United States. They were accepted, but the Compromise of 1850 did not allow them to practice slavery. The second resolution was about the organization of southwest territories without addressing slavery. The land and the territories of Utah and New Mexico were organized. An important part of the bill was that these new states could allow or not allow slavery depending on what the citizens wanted. The third was about the adjustment of the border of Texas and New Mexico. The territory known as Texas claimed a lot of land it never controlled. It was the largest territory and at the time was the largest state. It entered the union as a slave state. Before it joined as a state, the Republic of Texas had accrued a lot of debt. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the US government paid Texas ten million dollars in exchange of land it gained during the Mexican American war. This was not enough of a compromise for either side. The abolitionists who were fighting to end slavery in the capital were not satisfied. The south did not like the idea of slavery being illegal in the capital. They feared it would spread to the South. This was an attempt to “meet in the middle”. It had uninteded consequences, however.
