A Realist View on the Refugee Crisis
The Syrian refugee crisis has lead to a worldwide issue that cannot be ignored by the most powerful nations of this world. Yet, the world refuses to deal with the refugee crisis since it can potentially change the ideals, values, and image that each superpower portrays to themselves and the globe. A traditional way to look at it is using an open analysis of the realist theory in international relations. A key factor to the realist theory is to safeguard security in ones home nation. Syria is currently led by President Bashar-al Assad who supports the faction of the Shiites. However, the Sunni faction is the majority in Syria, and they want President Assad to step aside and resign. President Assad has been successful in keeping his regime in power by using the strong Syrian military force to eliminate the failing Sunni opposition. Assad's strategy is to target towns or cities that are mostly filled with Sunni opposition members and commanding planes to bomb them. Assad's strategy as made opposition groups unsuccessful, mainly because they oppose becoming united under one leader, and their lack of weapons power to fight back against Assad's army. Instead, in a realist view, it would be a straight hit against Iran and their attempts to hurt the United States. Some would argue that if the US remove Assad from power then the Sunnis will be left to run Syria and in turn kill all of the Shiites in retribution. The US as to fear becoming the catalyst to such a major potential massacre. Yet, realists would combat that by saying that our only responsibility is our US security and nothing else. In world filled with anarchy the US must act to seek the country's own interests. Additionally, the US cannot wait for the United Nations to remove Assad peacefully, even they were really able to. At the end of the day the UN is not a state, which gives it no legitimate authority to even attempt to remove Assad in the first place As they truly do not have power to control states. Therefore, this responsibility lies on shoulders of the US, to take action in Syria. Ultimately, by implementing a plan to remove Assad this will lead to the success of a realists solution of hurting relations with Syria and Iran while keeping refugees in their original homes and avoiding terrorism, giving the US a more stable national
