This year the Annual Literacy Festival was titled Strange Bedfellows and was mainly about Politics and Literature.This title was chosen to be the theme this year because of the new upcoming president that will be elected and all of the politics that are taking place right now. All of the participants this year were chosen based off of the fact that they all connect to “poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and have attempted to make sense and art out of political actualities” (Old Dominion University Libraries). The festival took place from Sunday September 25th to Thursday September 29th at different locations on campus. was Karan Mahajan. Mahajan is a realistic-fiction writer, although his book is fiction, it depicts actual current events in the world and the emotions mixed into that. Mahajan spoke to students and staff at Old Dominion University on how these things really do happen and what we should be doing to help and stop them. At this event, Mr. Mahajan spoke about his novel, The Association of Small Bombs. He read some pages from chapter 0 and he held a Q & A for the audience at the end to ask questions about his life or book. Mahajan is a writer from New Delhi, India but who currently lives in Austin, Texas. He is a graduate from Stanford University and is famous for his two books that have been published, Family Planning and his most recent novel, The Association of Small Bombs. His work has been nominated for the Dylan Thomas Prize and has also appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and many more. Mr.Karan spoke about how he was influenced by american writers and how he feels that when writing it should flow like music on a page, he claims he allows the sentence structure to take him to places he has never been before to enhance his creativity. When writing The Association of Small Bombs, Karan used a lot of Indian words but did not translate or use footnotes because he wanted his work to be plain spoken.
