I routinely have deer, rabbits, and other woodland critters in my yard, and it’s not uncommon to come across bears, coyotes, or even moose on the way to exams. Outside of work, there is no shortage of camping, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hunting, and hiking opportunities. The Chattahoochee River, Georgia’s most heavily-used water source, is home to a variety of fish and a supplier of over 70% of the drinking water in metro Atlanta; it was also ranked number three on America’s ‘most endangered’ list. Each day, more than 250 million gallons of sewage waste water is dumped in to river, so news that the river is constantly contaminated with E. coli is no surprise. Even with the vast amount of contamination, Georgia allows the dumping of waste to continue; they give out permits to dump in the waters. Without proper laws and regulations, the continued dumping of waste on the Chattahoochee River will eventually cause it to become too contaminated for human use and wildlife survival. The Chattahoochee River begins in the northeast of Georgia and continues down 524 miles to Apalachicola Bay, Florida.…

Reflecting on my years as a member of the Silver Starlites I realize I would not be where I am today if it were not for the influence of my parents, teammates, Starlite parents and my four magnificent coaches, who surprisingly managed to put up with my antics for ten years. It is because of their encouragement and support that I have truly learned what it means to be disciplined, audacious, dedicated, a role model and most importantly a champion. Our competitions came around two and occasionally three times a month, this meant that if I were not home doing my school work I was sure to be in the gym practicing my butt off while my mom repeatedly nagged about how bad my free hand was or that my showmanship and eye contact was not enough, not to mention her eye rolls every time I dropped. It was excruciatingly frustrating to know that it…

A way of life offered to us from the sand, the sea, and the sun, and a precious resource, our seafood. North Florida’s environmental and economic wellbeing is now being stressed due to the reduced water flow down the Chattahoochee and Flint River systems. These river systems flow into the Apalachicola River and then to the Apalachicola River basin. This reduced flow is changing salinity levels, which in turn is having a negative impact on the health of the entire ecosystem of the river and river basin.…

In the past few decades, the growing issue of global warming is causing spring to begin earlier with each passing year while the ongoing season is still supposed to be winter; this also causes a false spring to be experienced in some regions. A false spring is the climate change that causes a false state of spring where weather is extremely similar to springtime conditions, followed by freezing temperatures. During this brief period, plants begin their springtime duties only for winter weather to return later on. As the climate has grown to become warmer, the appearance of false springs is supposed to decrease across North America.…
