Research Paper On Shapeshifter

Decent Essays
What is a shapeshifter? Shapeshifters are human like creatures that learn how to change their form to whatever or whoever they want. Some common versions of these creatures include, but are not limited to, vampires, werewolves, skinwalkers, and wendigos. Shapeshifters are seen commonly through mythology.
Shapeshifters are myths, which means that there are multiple versions of them. One version is from the tv series Supernatural. In the show Supernatural the shapeshifters can become anyone they want, even celebrities and public figures. The way they shift shape is by shedding their previous skin and becoming a new being. When they become a new person, they gain their memories and thoughts as well as their fingerprints and DNA. In the show they talk about how to kill a shapeshifter. In order to do so, you have to either shoot them or stab them in the heart with silver.
One example of shape shifting in folktales is the Princess and the Frog. In the story of the Princess and the Frog, the Frog is the shapeshifter. He is turned into a frog at one point in his life. The princess rescues him and transforms back into a prince, his natural form. What makes him a shapeshifter is the fact that he had transformed into a completely different form.

Selkies are creatures commonly found in Irish, Icelandic and Scottish mythology. They can transform from a seal to a human. Selkies are able to shapeshift by shedding their seal skin. Many times, humans fall in love with a selkie without knowing what they are. This is tragic because the selkies can only remain human for a short period of time before being forced back to the sea. These can be found in the story of

In Celtic myth, a Selkie is a creature that lives most of its life as a seal, but sheds its skin from time to time, leaving it on the beach while it dances on dry land. After discarding their sealskin, Selkies are said to take the form of hypnotically beautiful men or women, which often makes them a source of fascination for fishermen. The most common folktales relating to the Selkie usually involve a lone fisherman spying a beautiful Selkie maiden on the shore and stealing her seal skin, hiding it away and forcing her to become his bride. The fisherman must carefully guard the secret of where her pelt is hidden, because she will often abandon her husband and children and use it to escape back to the sea.…

Likewise, in the story “Master Cat: Puss in Boots” the characters, Master Cat, the ogre, and multiple others are also anthropomorphized, or given human characteristics, throughout the story specifically so Master Cat can achieve what he wants to achieve. Master Cat is supplied with the human characteristics of trickery, greed, manipulation, and the desire to be accepted. In the story, Master Cat manipulates the ogre into turning into a mouse and “as soon as the cat saw it, he pounced on it and ate it up” (Perrault 50). The cat tricked the ogre into changing into a mouse by belittling what he could do. Perrault version of Cinderella Vs the Grimm brothers’ version of Cinderella. “Fairy tale” is the term also used to describe something containing unusual happiness, like “fairy tale ending” a happing ending, or “fairy tale romance”, though not all fairy tales have a happy ending. According to Arthur Schlesinger, classical tales “tell children what they unconsciously know-that human nature is not innately good, that conflict is real, that life is harsh before it is, happy-and thereby reassure them about their own fears and their own sense of self” (229). Despite the fact that both Perrault and the Grimm brothers versions of Cinderella are fundamentally similar to each other, but the differences between them show two different moral universes.…
