Shabanu’s getting married soon to Murad, but then something comes up and her sister Phulan is now getting married to him. So Shabanu ends up getting stuck marrying a 55 year old man and she can not do anything about it because her dad is doing it for something like debts. In Shabanu culture impacts Shabanu in many different ways such as, customs and tradition, economy, and religion. Getting married young and to someone within your family is part of customs and tradition, as stated in the book “ Phulan is 13. She will marry our cousin, Hamir, this summer” ( Staples, 2) This quote helps understand the connection by stating who she is marrying and when she is getting married. This affected her by thinking she was going to marry in the family.
