Senioritis and Post-High School Plans
As fourth quarter begins, students across the high school are realizing that the school year is beginning to draw to a close. The weather is slowly becoming more pleasant, end-of-the-year events are starting up, and the thought of summer is creeping into the back of many students’ minds again--especially seniors. As it does every year, Senioritis is starting to make an appearance in the graduating class. Senioritis occurs in many seniors when they realize that in a few short months, they will have graduated high school and finished four of the hardest (but best) years of their life so far. Although normally not a very serious matter, Senioritis can have a negative effect on a student’s life after school.

A decline in grades is a major aspect of senioritis. An affected senior has trouble concentrating on the things that will enable him or her to walk across the stage and grab a diploma. Take the case of Rosemary, a typical senioritis sufferer who began her senior year with a 3.9 GPA. By the end of the year, she wasn’t even eligible to graduate as a member of the National Honor Society because she no longer possessed the requisite 3.6 GPA which members must have.…

“Senioritis: An ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary. "Senioritis"). All throughout America, thousands of seniors develop symptoms of this debilitating disease, especially during their second semesters. Is this epidemic a legitimate illness, or is senioritis just a rationalization made by lazy students? Although several seniors say otherwise, senioritis is a pseudo-scientific disease employed by students to slack on their studies and extracurricular activities. Despite senioritis being a fake illness, defense mechanisms, or “unconscious process[es] that protect individuals from painful ideas” are commonly used by seniors to make their impending futures seem less frightening ("Defense…

Ever set a goal for yourself, like making Honour Roll, losing weight and getting fit, or being picked for Valedictorian? Like lots of seniors that had contracted Senioritis, maybe you started with drive and hope, but then started showing symptoms; lack of motivation, excess sleeping, repeated absences and generally having a dismissive attitude. Just like everyone else, I am struggling with staying motivated towards the end of my last high school year. It is easy for a student to spend hours on YouTube, but when it comes to school assignments, after a half hour, it is break time. Is there any way to get past the senioritis mentality?…

The most prominent form of ageism in the senior citizen’s life is the injustices in the health care system. Senior citizens reported that they are more likely to report ageism in their daily lives than racism or sexism (Marshall 2007, p. 258). Social Security and Medicare are two of the most attacked programs in the governmental budget, never physically altered because senior benefits are the third-rail of the budget (Campbell 2003, p. 32-33). The third-rail is the electrified rail of train tracks, and if a politician attempts to change Social Security then they will lose support. Rather than changing the benefits, they simply refuse to reform it and adjust it to fit modern situations and prices, and “borrow” money from their budget, until…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

As I walk through the high school doors on my first day of senior year, I think to myself, “This is it, this is where it all ends.” Most would think of that statement as me reminiscing on my final year of high school, but I’m not. I’m thinking to myself, “This is where I’m supposed to ruin my life.” This is a cruel statement, but it’s true. It has been proven by the ones older than me, and it will be proven by the ones younger than me.…

In life, people often tend to see things differently, however in the case of social classes and students success, it can be viewed as cycle. This cycle cycle involves the rich getting richer and the poor staying poor, there are many factors that lead to the cycle and inequity that exists between the education of the two social classes. It was a new day of school, I was thrilled with the fact that I would be graduating this year yet scared of the journey ahead. Beginning my first day of Twelfth grade the teachers said, “This is the year, where we will talk about college and prepare you.” Seeing some classmates thrilled to move on to the real world got me hyped as well, but my fears became more and more present.…
