Since 1964, approximately two and one-half million nonsmokers succumbed to death from health problems caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke is both the fumes produced from the burning end of a cigarette and the vapors exhaled from others nearby. Again, over two and million people have fallen dead from health problems associated with that unfortunate habit since 1964. This alarming fact acts as a call to action to ban smoking in public areas where people fall victim to the deadly mist and the health problems it causes. A risk-free level of secondhand smoke does not exist. Even brief exposure proves harmful to your health. The health problems associated with those horrendous fumes include: numerous types of infections in children, more frequent and severe asthma attacks, a higher chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) in young children, heart and lung disease, an increased chance of stroke in adults, and a greater …show more content…
Individuals in the United States of America retain certain rights, but the right to smoke does not fall into that list of rights. While secondhand smoke does not kill instantly, like a gun or bomb can, it does prove lethal to many. The federal government has left laws pertaining puffing to the states. In many states smoking has bans or limits to it. For example, in the state of Texas it is illegal to have a lit cigarette, or cigar, in a public school, an elevator, enclosed movie theatre or movie house, library, museum, hospital, bus, plane or train. A $500 fine acts as punishment for this crime. The inhalation of cigarettes’ exhaust prove fatal and detrimental to health. The adverse effects of smoking on people and the high number of deaths act as irrefutable evidence for why it deserves a ban. Therefore, everyone opposed to that destructive habit and the harmful diseases and effects of it should make a stand against this horrendous
