Once upon a time, there “was” three little pigs and a big bad wolf. At, first the pigs were skeptical with moving next to a wolf's house, for obvious reasons. The first pig built his house out of straw, the second pig made his out of twigs, and the third pig made his out of concrete. When night fall came and the pigs were sleeping, the big bad wolf came out, since he was asleep all day.…

Yellowstone Wolves Around the late 1920’s bounty hunters from the government exterminated the park’s last native wolves as part of a national wolf extermination program to protect the farmer’s livestock. In a exert from an interview Scott said “These animals themselves have not killed livestock, and don't know how” and “ They'll learn how to kill wild prey from these older wolves that we're putting them with” so the wolves have not killed livestock because the will learn how to eat wild prey. I believe the wolves should stay in Yellowstone. I believe the wolves should stay in Yellowstone because they help out the ecosystem. In 1955 when the wolves were reestablished into the park the elk population was around 18,000 .With…
The dire wolf, or Canis dirus, is a wolf that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch (2.6 million to 11,700 years ago) and became extinct between 10,000 to 16,000 years ago during the ice age. It was native to North America and thousands of Dire Wolf skeletons were found and stored in La Brea tar pits in southern California, where it is believed to be the most common mammal in the area. Remains of the Dire wolf have also been found across a broad range of habitats in North America, which include the plains, grasslands, and some mountain areas in North America, and the savannah of South America. The average height in elevation is 7,400 feet above sea level (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). In the United States, dire wolf fossils have been…
I never thought I would push myself beyond my expectations until the day I wanted to become a Swamp Fox. Swamp Fox is a special forces organization at the college I currently attend, Marion Military Institute, which teaches its inducted cadets small unit tactics, techniques, and procedures. I knew it was not going to be easy to be inducted but I also knew that by doing so I would push myself to become a part of a brotherhood that would enlighten me. Of course I did not know exactly what to expect, I just wanted to maintain my grades and my health as those are the two most important things keeping me eligible for an appointment at West Point. The first thing I had to do was get through zero night.…
On Monday, May 22, 1865, a small band of soldiers from the 22nd and 28th Iowa regiments left their camp. The night before, there had been a heavy rainstorm. Their destination was a large peach orchard not far from the rows of white canvas. In previous visits to the orchard, soldiers had discovered a kennel of “bloodhounds,” ferocious animals trained for the pursuit of enslaved people and believed by the soldiers to have been used in the apprehension of Union soldiers who escaped from Confederate prison camps. A man named Butler, the owner of the orchard, had threatened peach-seeking soldiers with the dogs.…
Red Wolves, legendary members of the dog family, are very important animals which are a vital part of the food chain and our environment. In an attempt to emphasize the importance of this animal, it is necessary to discover its characteristics, understand why it is in danger, stress the importance of saving the Red Wolf, and learn how it was reintroduced into the wild. Twice as big as a coyote and about half the size of a Gray Wolf, these Red Wolves are beautiful creatures. Fully grown female Red Wolves are about fifty-two pounds.…
Megan Hoffman The truth and importance of Gray Wolves Even under protective laws, Gray Wolves are still being killed! Although people tend to look down on wolves in general, it does not mean it's for good reason or acceptable. There is more to any creature then meets the eye, and for Wolves it is especially so. Gray Wolves are of a greater benefit then what we give them credit for and are often mistreated or otherwise viewed as something unwanted, unneeded, and ill-received. The Gray Wolf species has long been damned and slaughtered for minuscule infractions and illusions of identity despite how they are unlike their fabled counterparts, are viewed as "Spiritual brothers" by some Native Americans (Swinburne 10), and are beneficial to their…
Introduction The reintroduction of the Mexican Gray wolf into the southwestern United States has been a subject of large controversy in the past few decades. They first became protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1976; this species that had numbers in the thousands only a few decades earlier had become completely extinct in the United States (Southwest Wildlife). In 1960 the population dropped to seven, and yet there were still no efforts to implement their recovery as a species for 16 more years. Currently the goal of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service is to expand the population in the wild to at least one hundred (Bergman).…
On May 1st. , 2016 in California Yosemite National Park packs of 8 to 10 wolves are killing deer and their population is decreasing drastically. Park authorities are worried about this situation and are trying to find solutions to this problem. Wolves are known to be the most aggressive because they hunt in groups that number from 7 to 10 at a time. They are carnivorous, with really sharp teeth that help them eat their prey.…
One of the most renowned rewilding projects which has demonstrated the effects rewilding has on a whole ecosystem, was the reintroduction of grey wolves (Canis lupus) into Yellowstone National Park in the North West of the United States. The wolves were reintroduced to the park in 1995-1996 and have subsequently recolonised the whole park and some of the surrounding area known as the greater Yellowstone ecosystem (GYE) (Smith et al., 2003). The reintroduction of the wolves has had a great effect on the ecosystem of Yellowstone; the wolves have greatly reduced the numbers of ungulates, especially Elk which have been found to support the wolf packs almost entirely (Smith et al., 2003). The wolves have also had an effect on many of the other organisms…
The Red Fox is known for its fur color and long, bushy tail. The population of the Red Fox for pre-breeding is estimated at around 240,000 individuals. A large number of foxes are killed per unit area by gamekeepers and has increased steadily since the early 1960s in Britain, although they are wildey hunted it does not affect their population status. Some of physical Characteristics of the Red Fox is they have a coat of long guard hairs and soft fine underfur that is typically a rich reddish brown color.…
Now there are people that are hunting wolves in the state of Michigan for pure sport, and many of the population oppose this. The Gray Wolves have been struggling for 50 years on the brink of extinction. There are now less than 700 wolves in Michigan. The Gray wolf and or subspecies of the gray wolf (the Timber Wolf) has been undertaking many infringements on it’s rights, struggling to stay on the endangered species list instead, being knocked down to just ‘threatened. ’(“Michigan.”…
The purpose of this study is to assess the habitat quality of Schmeeckle Reserve in regards to the needs of the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). This research will focus on the presence and relative abundance of small mammals, which serve as the main food source of the Red Fox’s diet. The vegetative habitat will also be studied; this includes the cover types present and any forage plant species used by the fox for food. The results of this study will allow for the continued management of the Red Fox in hopes to ensure a sustainable population is maintained in Schmeeckle Reserve. With the Schmeeckle Reserve’s first priority of being a nature reserve, it has been managed to support a variety of animal and plant species.…
