Have you ever been to the Sedgwick County Zoo and walked out of the tiger exhibit and see an empty exhibit? Although it may look empty it’s really not, if you look inside the tree stump you’ll see a shadowy figure which is really a red panda sleeping. Red panda’s sleep during the day and are most active at night. You know the feeling when you eat something sweet for the first time in a long time? Well red pandas do too, they love the taste of aspartame which is used in most fake sugars. The red panda is a very unique animal and zoos all over the world are proud to show them off as one of their most prized possessions. Although the red panda’s natural habitat is endangered their species is still thriving. The red panda is very unique in the way of their family. Their name references that they are a close relative to the panda but, science has proven that wrong. Red pandas are more closely related to, Pinnipeds, raccoons, skunks and mustelids. The gestation period is approximately 140 days and the liter consists of one to four young. The young are very energetic unlike the adults. The young reach adult size at around twelve months. (Red Panda - Smithsonian). The young are born blind but, their eyes open when they are around twenty days old (Red Panda - Wildscreen Arkive).
Red pandas also have a very interesting diet. The species is classified as Herbivorous Carnivoran but they are mostly herbivores. Their diet consists of bamboo leaves, they also eat the bamboo shoots when they are in season. They also eat fruit, flowers, acorns, and roots. (7 things you didn’t know about red pandas).
