Over the past decade, governors from both political parties pushed for the creation and expansion of publicly funded preschool programs. Since 2003, many states have increased their investment in preschool by more than 200%. The state of California significantly expanded its preschool program by adding 11,500 new, full-day, and full-year seats for 4 year olds from low-income families. Forty-two % of four-year-olds attend publicly funded preschool (28% attend public prekindergarten (PreK) programs, 11% Head Start, and 3% special education preschool programs) (Yoshikawa 2). Even though many kids that come from a low-income families benefit better in preschool than a middle-income child, children that attend high quality preschool programs are less likely to be retained or receive special education services. Preschool can cost about $300-$1,100 monthly for just one child, according to the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA). This would be impossible to pay for a family that earns minimum wage. Children that never have been in a daycare with many children usually have health problems (getting sick) when entering preschool. These children could get sick very easily from their immune system not being built up. If your preschool is closed for a holiday that a parent has to work, then you have to find a back-up care for their children. Preschool is not beneficial to all children. You can give all children the education and time from preschool, but that does not mean that will graduate high school, go to college, or have the best record when they grow up. Many parents do not have flexible schedules to pick up their child at a certain when the daycare closes so they would have to pay a late fee. These are just the start of many reasons that children don't attend preschool.
