Research Paper On Poly-Paraphthalamide

Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide, or Kevlar, is a strong polymer that has been used in a wide range of applications from clothing to spacecraft. The material was chosen because of its relevance in my life as a musician due its application in marching snare drum heads. Kevlar's inception dates back to the late 1960s and early 70s in a DuPont facility, where a young woman named Stephanie Kwolek was researching high-performance fibers for use in reducing gasoline consumption in automobiles. Her team was to find a stronger material for reinforcing tires to allow them to be lighter, stiffer, and more efficient in gas consumption. One day during her work, she discovered that the polymer she was working with, Poly-paraphenylene terephthalamide (See Figure 1), was forming liquid crystals in a solution. It's molecular properties differed from the typical polymers in that it was straight as opposed to being curved. This struck her as odd, and she approached the technician about running the solution through the polymer spinneret, a device that transforms a polymer solution …show more content…
In body armor, layers of Kevlar are used to slow down a bullet and break it down. These layers of Kevlar slow the bullet down enough so that it is stopped by the ceramic plate on the inside of the vest. Kevlar is also used in drum heads. The Kevlar is tightened to a high tension to create a cutting sound that pierces through the marching band. Many other materials like Mylar, aren't capable of being stretched like Kevlar while also maintaining the durability. The drum heads are made with Kevlar at the base and sealed with resin and a nylon layer in order to flatten out the drum head and make it more suitable for playing. The strength of the Kevlar allows the drum head to be struck at high velocities and force with very little wear, allowing the heads to last much longer before being replaced. (How

Survival Uses for Mylar Blankets First developed by NASA in 1964 Mylar blankets or also known as space blankets or thermal blankets are made from a thin sheet of plastic usually PET film that is coated with a metallic reflecting agent. Typically the blankets are gold or silver in color and the material is designed to reflect up to 97 percent of radiated heat. The blankets are designed to be waterproof as well. The reflective nature makes a Mylar blanket a literal lifesaver in cold weather survival situations for maintaining body heat to prevent hypothermia.…

Furosemide is a medication known as a loop diuretic (Allen, 2013). A diuretic is a medication which increases the amount of urine that passes out from the kidneys and they are often referred to as water tablets. It works by eliminating water and salt from the body through urination. In the kidneys, salt and water are filtered out of the blood and into the tubules of the kidney to the Glomerulus (Waugh and Grant, 2014), making the filtered fluid into urine (Omudhome, 2014). The sodium, chloride and water that are filtered out of the blood is then reabsorbed back into the blood before being eliminated as urine (Omudhome, 2014).…

Background: The origins of the Canadian currency come from all across the globe. Like many nations before it the history of their monetary system starts with its native peoples. The Native Canadians traded with each other using precious metals, pelts, and crafted supplies ( beads and pottery) for hundreds of years, but all of that changed after the French explorers were introduced. In the mid 1600’s (when the french officially declared Canada as a provenance called “New France”) is when this land was first introduced to the ideas and systems of banking, gold standards, and eventually paper banknotes to represent a stable currency.…

Reducing polypharmacy can be achieved through encouraging healthcare providers to review medication regimens for their geriatric patients. This type of intervention was evaluated in a study of older adults living in long-term care facilities in North Carolina (Trygstad, Christensen, Wegner, Sullivan, & Garmise, 2009). Pharmacists at each participating facility reviewed medication lists for harmful drugs, interactions, or unnecessary medications. They also reviewed new drug orders and addressed concerns with the prescriber before dispensing the medication. Medication costs, number of prescription drugs filled, and risk for hospitalization were assessed.…

In addition to the prevalence of concussion in boxing, Moriarity et al. state that “amateur boxers participating in a carefully supervised competition can have cognitive impairment suggestive of a concussive injury despite the absence of recognizable symptoms and clinical features of concussion at ringside” (p. 1013). With such an alarming rate of chronic brain injury in amateur boxing, various professionals are trying to resolve the problem.…
