Philosopher’s Stone Throughout history and especially throughout the Middle Ages the craft of alchemy has been very popular. The purpose and end goal of alchemy is to be able to turn simple metals like tin and lead into pure gold. Another reason as to why it is significant is because it allows the alchemist to be immortal. There have been many different legends that tell of immortality, such as the fountain of youth that was sought after by Spanish conquistadors. Among these many accounts, one legend stands out, the legend of the philosopher’s stone. The philosopher’s stone is vastly popular because of its interesting history, as well as its symbolism in the Alchemist and other books. To begin with the philosopher’s stone was discovered by Nicholas Flamel. He is a French alchemist born in the 14th century. In the year 1382 Flamel decoded the Kabbalah which resulted in him finding the secret of the philosopher’s stone. So far there have been no accounts of the stone being legitimate, but legend has it that the stone made Flamel immortal, and he is living somewhere in secret. The Philosopher’s stone represents the obstacles along the way of finding someone or something’s destiny. To be able to find the stone, an alchemist has to do many extremely difficult tasks and no amount of past experiences could help a person find it. Additionally, there is a large uncertainty that the stone is possible to find, like Santiago’s dream So he must have faith in himself and God. Through time, the stone goes through many physiological changes as it interacts with its environment. Correspondingly, Santiago goes through different changes in his journey to find his personal legend. These include being able to understand people more, being wiser, learned the language of the world, and identifying omens and
