I remember the first time Makayla ate peanuts she was only two years old. As we were all sitting at home watching a movie and enjoying a popcorn and peanut M&M mix. We gave Makayla her first peanut M&M. At first everything seemed fine but then she began to cough she was having difficulty breathing and then her lips and tongue begin to swell. We were all in an uproar, we didn't know what to do. So we all got in the car and rushed to the emergency room. Come to find out Makayla was allergic to peanuts. She was given an epinephrine shot and we were sent home with an EpiPen. I told my aunt and my cousin that if she could just eat a peanut every now and then her body will build up antibodies to the peanuts and she would no longer be …show more content…
After all, if I was going to convince them I would have to have proof to back this up. So my first stop what was the New England Journal of Medicine, published February 26, 2015. There was a LEAP (Learning Early about Peanut Allergy) trial conducted to determine the early introduction of the dietary peanut could serve as an effective primary and secondary strategy for the prevention of peanut allergies. The LEAP study showed that early oral introduction of peanuts could prevent allergy in high-risk, sensitized infants and in non-sensitized infants. Remember, Makayla was two years old when she ate her first peanut. Her allergy could have very well been prevented. This still did not help my case. So I begin to dig a little deeper. Next stop was Sciencenews.org. In the article titled Overcoming Peanut Allergy is Maintenance for Most, it stated that many people seem to overcome the allergy by consuming tiny-but-increasing amounts of the legume daily for months or years. But the protection often evaporates if they fail to keep eating peanuts regularly, a new study shows. This was the information I …show more content…
We were all gathered together as a family. We all loved peanuts. I made them just the way my grandmother made them. Now for the moment of truth. I called Makayla over to me. I said, “Mickey”, that is her nickname, “Want a peanut?” If you could have seen the looks on my family’s faces. Priceless. She was so excited to get these peanuts. Before they could protest, she had popped it in her mouth and begin to go to work. They were all yelling at me, my aunt was running around looking for the EpiPen I kept at my house. They did not notice that she was still eating and eating and eating. I finally got everyone to calm down and notice that she was fine. After the shock and the horror of it all, I explained to them that I had been giving Makayla, peanuts for months, not to mention other nuts too. My aunt was PISSED. I began to explain the information that I had researched about food allergies and how kids can overcome them. Even showed other studies besides the ones that I had previously researched. I did apologize to them for keeping them in the dark and definitely doing this without their permission. But, I was glad that I was able to help Makayla, and even more glad to prove that I was
