Overview of Osteoporosis The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) defines osteoporosis as a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced (iofbonehealth.org). No symptoms can be identified until a fracture happens. As we get older the minerals in our bones become less and less making them weaker and more brittle. When our bones become brittle they do not absorb as much stress and can cause them to break. As we age, our bones become less dense. In our early twenties bones are at their peak bone mass. The pathophysiology of osteoporosis is complex. Our bones contain three types of cells that are important, which include osteoclasts, osteoblasts, and osteocytes. Osteoclasts …show more content…
Though it may not be all over at once, it can occur anywhere in the skeletal system. In people with osteoporosis, bone loss is faster than the bone growth. Bones become porous, brittle, and become a lot easier to break. Fractures are most common in the hip, wrist, and spine. Osteoporosis can be a major problem in women, and fractures occur from everyday activities such as bending over, going up and down stairs, and lifting things …show more content…
The NOF states that of the estimated 10 million Americans that have osteoporosis, women represent 8 million. It is estimated that half of the women over 50 years old will break a bone. There are many reasons why women are more affected than men. They have estrogen that greatly decreases as they reach menopause and this can case bone loss (nof.org). Caucasian and Asian-American women have a higher tendency, at 20 percent, to have osteoporosis over the age of 50 than African-American (5%) and Latina (10%) women. Approximately 1 to 2 million men in the United States have osteoporosis, with another 8 to 13 million having low bone mass (Rao, Budhwar & Ashfaque, 2010). Men get osteoporosis due to different factors such as “age-related sex hormone deficiency, genetics, and lifestyle choices (e.g., physical inactivity, tobacco and excessive alcohol use).” (Rao, Budhwar & Ashfaque, 2010) Osteoporosis can also occur in children, however, it is rare. This is usually due to an underlying medical disorder or the medications they take to treat a disorder. This can be a problem because it happens during critical bone-building years (NAIMS).
