Research Paper On Nootropics

The ability to enhance our cognitive abilities and become “smarter” should not be frowned upon nor be compared to athletes trying to win first place by exceeding their natural physical capabilities. I think that students should not be prohibited from using nootropics in the same way that athletes are ban from using performance enhancements. In terms of biological factors, the way I envision nootropics, is that they are drugs that are unlocking and activating parts of the brain that we don’t always access. If a student is able to take them then they can have better cognitive abilities such as spatial reasoning, memory, and information processing. As the article suggested, they can help students that have learning disabilities or lower IQs preform better and thus making them more competitive in school. The most harmful effect that may occur is psychological dependence. A student may feel that they must take the drug in order to perform well academically and that is the only way around it, but some students are already psychologically dependent on caffeine after quickly becoming tolerant to its stimulant effects. But if we think of positive psychological effects, then we would see that the drugs would do more good than harm. Students that have suffered from stress, anxiety, and low self esteem stemming from struggling with academic perform can now have a way to help enhance their learning capabilities. The nootropics would allow them to retain more information and do school work more efficiently and therefore reduce testing anxiety, stress with getting work done, and higher self-esteem when they get better grades.
