His career skyrocketed when he was employed for the Continental Edison Company in France as a designer of electrical equipment. After two years of working there, he was shifted to New York to work for Thomas Edison. Edison asked if he could turn Edison's DC (direct current) motors and generators to AC (alternating current). He prompted him to do this by offering a reward of 50,000 American dollars if he did it.
