Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, Croatia on July 10th , 1856. He was born to Milutin Tesla and Đuka Mandic. His father was a Serbian orthodox priest and his mother was a housewife. Tesla's interest in electrical invention was spurred by his mother. She invented small household appliances in her spare time while her son was growing up. He was the fourth out of five children. His career skyrocketed when he was employed for the Continental Edison Company in France as a designer of electrical equipment. After two years of working there, he was shifted to New York to work for Thomas Edison. Edison asked if he could turn Edison's DC (direct current) motors and generators to AC (alternating current). He prompted him to do this by offering a reward of 50,000 American dollars if he did it. He completed his task and when he asked for the money Edison laughed and said, "Tesla, you don't understand American humour." Tesla immediately resigned from the job. This was the start of what was called "The War Of Currents," with Tesla supporting AC, and Edison supporting DC. In 1888, four years later, Tesla was hired by the industrialist George Westinghouse, who was impressed by his idea of
