“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” This quote by Nelson Mandela can tell us how great it is to have freedom and respect for all. Nelson Mandela was a man that helped bring democracy to the black natives of South Africa. He is a hero in my eyes because he fought for other people, stayed behind his beliefs and wanted equality for all, and was honored and respected for his actions. He was a man that searched for freedom and equality for all. He didn’t care about the consequences and fought until South Africa’s government was fair to all.

He simply wanted to unify Africa as one. He led the anti-apartheid movement and became the role model for other people to stand up and speak for what they think is right. On History.com, in the article ‘Nelson Mandela,” apart from leading the anti-apartheid movement, Mandela also founded the Umkonto we Sizwe, which stands for “Spear of the Nation.” This group planned direct sabotages toward the government of South Africa and other idols of apartheid. This group had taken responsibility for over 70 acts of sabotage which led to the arrest of Mandela with charges of organizing illegal demonstrations. During his sentence the police had traced him with more serious crimes of treason and sabotage linked to Spear of the Nation which earned him a life time sentence. In the times of his imprisonment, he was offered many chances for freedom, but refused many of them including in 1985 when the president of South Africa granted him freedom in return for his renunciation of violence, but he declined and stated that he would do so only until the government granted blacks full political rights.
