Rolihlahla Madiba Dalibhunga Mandela, known globally as Nelson Mandela, was born in a small rural village in South Africa named Mvezo in the Qunu district, on July 18th, 1918 (Limb, 2008). His father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, was chief of Mvezu. His fathers’ third wife, Nosekeni Fanny was Mandela’s mother (Mandela, 1994). As a member of the Xhosa culture of South Africa, he fully embraced his cultural heritage, but also sought after knowledge in different areas, such as the English language whilst attending European styled schools to better his education (Limb, 2008). As a member of the Thembu tribe, with his father having been placed in a role of chiefdom (Mandela, 1994), Mandela quickly grew accustom to authority and roles of leadership in his early stages of life.
