Nelson Mandela was born in Mvezo, Transkei, South Africa. He was born in July of 1918. Mandela was adopted at the age of nine. In 1939, he enrolled at the University of Fort Hare. He became really involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20’s. On June 12, 1964, Mandela received a life sentence for committing sabotage against South Africa’s apartheid government. In 1985, President P.W. Botha offered Mandela’s release in exchange for renouncing armed struggle. Mandela also went into surgery. In July 1988, Mandela turned 70.
