In the winter Golden-crowned Kinglets are scattered across most of the United States. Seriously. This rather serious looking little monarch is found from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Yet it’s still a truly rare treat to see one, since the kinglets are small and spend a great deal of time amongst tree branches. The above kinglet was photographed at Magee Marsh along Lake Erie in Ohio.…
The suburb of Cabramatta has long been known as a highly populated area by Indo-Chinese migrants and influenced manifestly by their culture since the influx of refuges from the Vietnam War and Australia’s change in past migration policies. Cabramatta has been the centre of academic debates and literature since the 1990’s due to the ethnic residential concentration within the one area. Ethnic residential concentration is the large migration of one group from a particular culture to another country and residing within the same area, impacting the cultural landscape. This essay will provide evidence showing that although there are negative aspects in relation to high ethnic residential concentration with in Cabramatta, it is significantly outweighed…
Although debate over the causes of the decline among many migrant species continues, attention has focused largely on events associated with the stationary phases of the annual cycle. What has been largely overlooked in development of conservation strategies is the importance of events during…
In spring time lots of flowers bloom. There are millions of types of flowers and they are all different. The Sunflower is a yellow and brown flower. It was brought to Russia by royalty. Tsar Peter the Great found the flower in the Netherlands and brought them to Russia.…
Nikole Van Engen Mr. Holwerda Law November 10, 2015 Latin Kings - Kingism During the 1940’s, Chicago was home to a newly formed gang, the Latin Kings. Many Puerto Rican immigrants formed groups similar to their views of those in Puerto Rico. I chose King George because I wanted to know more about him. I was interested in this person when I first read about him in the anthology. I read that he was the king of Great Britain which means he is the most powerful man. George taxed the Americans which got the Americans very angry. After that he taxed the Americans on tea, lead, paint, and more items.…
I remembered walking on San Bruno Mountain as a six year old and seeing small, fuzzy blue butterflies fluttering in the spring afternoon. I thought about how lovely they were, and each year I looked forward to seeing them. However, as each year passed, I saw less and less butterflies. As awful as it was, I felt there had to be something I could do. It wasn’t until The Golden Gate Park Stewardship program gave me that opportunity.…
There is already a large 1,954-mile border between the United States and Mexico that travels a variety of terrains, including urban areas and deserts. The barrier is located on both urban and uninhabited sections of the border, areas where the most concentrated numbers of illegal crossings and drug trafficking have been observed in the past. Environmentalists expressed concern about butterfly migration corridors and the future of species of local wildcats, the ocelot, the jaguarondi, and the jaguar. Also, a potential impact to sensitive resources in the areas where fence is being constructed (Wikipedia)…
I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…
I am not sure if they have even migrated yet. " When humans feed wild birds, they change their migration patterns instead of following their own natural patterns. In the passage "Stop Feeding Wild Birds" it states, "Artificial feeders attract many birds and makes them want to linger around, expecting handouts than following their own migration patterns. " When birds change their migration times or stop migrating overall, might not survive the constantly changing seasons. If only humans would stop feeding birds before it time for the them to migrate, the birds would follow their migration patterns.…
During the time period of 1700-1900 there were many changes and continuities in long distance migrations in both Europe as well as in the Americas. The continuity during this time period in long distance migrations was that there was a constant flow of foreign migrator’s that were coming into the United States looking for economic gain. However the change in long distance migrations in both Europe and the Americas was that at first there was a diaspora of Africans coming into the United States but this changed when the slave trade that was occurring across the Atlantic was outlawed, because of this abolishment of slavery many indentured servants started to migrate to the United States. During the time period of 1700-1900 there were many continuities…
“Faith is seeing light with your heart when all your eyes see is darkness.” This quote perfectly describes Patria who is one of the sisters in the book, In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez.
