Most historians believe that the project commenced during the period 1503-1506, but Kemp and art historian note that there is no confirmation of the date by history. According to Vasari, one of Leonardo’s contemporary, believes that Da Vinci left the artwork unfinished after working on it for four years. He was later invited by the king of France, King Francis I to work within the castle. He believes that it was here that Da Vinci continued with the Mona Lisa art, where he finalized the work and leaving it in the possession of France. Carmen Bambach, who is also an art historian, concludes that the refined work on the project was carried out during the period spent in the castle, 1516-1517. The masterpiece has changed locations and ownership for many years, precisely during the world war and the French Revolution.
