Before Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel he did other beautiful works of art. First Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany. His mother had died when he was six, and his father was serving for the Florentine government agent (Orleans). It must have been hard for a boy so young to lose his mother but that doesn’t stop him from becoming anything but incredibly talented. Even though it is a Catholic Church there were no illustrations of Christ, but in the Old Testament scenes (Harris). Michelangelo strayed from the traditional Christian art by intentionally painting saints without halos or wings and God without a crown (Rebman 39). This was a pretty bold move for him. “In order for Michelangelo to frame the central Old Testament scenes, Michelangelo painted a fictive architectural modeling and supporting statues down the length of the chapel,” (Italian Renaissance). Above the biblical narratives, portraits of the first thirty-two popes would be executed in chronological order of their papacy, encompassing several centuries (Rebman 25).
