Marc Jacobs, the leading figure behind the Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs iconic brands, was born a Jewish family in New York City on August 9, 1963. Marc Jacobs’ father died when the son-to-be designer was only seven years old. Living with a mentally unstable mother, without the support of a a father, with the instability of his mothers’ endless courters, he eventually decided to move to the Upper West Side to reside with his paternal grandparents. It was there, under their care, that he was encouraged to pursue his dreams, and follow his heart.
