The capital city of Madagascar is Antananarivo or Tanarive in French. Antananarivo is the largest city in Madagascar. The city is located in the central highlands of Madagascar, has a surface area of about 33.4 miles square and is 4,199 feet above sea level. Antananarivo was built on the summit of three hill ranges that connect to form a Y. The city has since grown to cover the hills and the hill bases. The city is bordered to the south and the west by the Ikopa River. The name Antananarivo means ‘City of the Thousand’ in Malagasy. The city was founded in the 16th century as was the capital of the Imerina kingdom until 1710 when the kingdom broke into four regions and Antananarivo became the capital of the southern region. The city gained back its status as the capital of the Imerina capital in 1794 and has since retained its status.

The sights to see in the city are; the Rova of Antananarivo, also known as the queen’s palace, it is a historical palace which housed the royal family of the Imerina kingdom, the palace was razed by a fire in 1995 but is undergoing renovation. Andafiavarata palace, the palace was the prime minister’s residence in the 19th century but was turned into a museum. Tsimbazaza zoo is a big attraction as it has preserved the skeleton remains of the extinct elephant bird and has a number of indigenous animal species. Soarano railway station, Ambatondrafandrana, the place has a medicinal plant garden. Other attractions include; a museum in Isoraka, several open-air markets and a number of 19th century memorial
