I think that Macbeth was like most of humankind. He saw an opportunity for what he perceived as a better life and he wanted it. If Macbeth had not met the witches, he wouldn’t have been exposed to the temptation of the “best” option. I think he would have gone home, Thane of Glamis and of Cawdor, and been happy to serve the King. Perhaps his wife wouldn’t be the crazy psycho she is in the story and would be a loving wife to her honest husband, but we can only hope. With a character as strong as her, that’s difficult to see.
There is also the chance that if the witches had not met Macbeth the prophecy still would have come true, but in a different way. Maybe it was fate for that to happen to Macbeth and there was nothing he could do but maintain
