To be or not to be: Lowering the drinking age to 18 The notion of legal age of drinking refers to the age when it is legal to consume or purchase alcoholic drinks. There are myriad factors that contribute to the determination of drinking age across many countries. These many range from socio-cultural factors, religious factors to economic factors; all of these determinants help the governments across various countries in deciding the appropriate age of drinking. According to International Center for Alcohol Policies, “the age of drinking is 21 in USA, presently.” Furthermore, Carpenter and Dobkin (2011) state that, “In summer 2008, more than 100 school presidents and other advanced education …show more content…
Lowering the age from 21 to 18 would encourage more youngsters to consume and purchase alcohol at a speeding rate, and their involvement in other activities along with drinking would raise the unwanted cases of teen pregnancies and harmful, infectious diseases.
Thus, there is rising concern among the government officials of the country to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18 in order to yield maximum benefits for the whole economy, and to mitigate the strong negative impacts that result for the whole country from the drinking age of 21. Lowering the age limit to 18 would not only benefit the economy, it would also entail positive effects for the society as well.
