Louie was showing defiance when, in the beginning, he was running away from the police. Louie stated, “...and then I ran like mad” (Hillenbrand 6). This quote indicates that Louie was a troublemaker and was always getting himself in a dilemma. Nevertheless, what he stole, he in return gave it to other people. This emphasizes that what he took from the needy, he donated it to the poor. When Louis started running, it changed him because now he is taking his mind off of thievery and is focusing on his running.
