Angelo Ambrogini commonly known by his nickname Poliziano was born in Montepulciano, Italy on July 14, 1454. After the murder of his father, at the age of 10, Poliziano was sent to live with relatives in Florence. In Florence he learned Latin and Greek and at the age of 13 began writing Latin poems. These poems caught the attention of Lorenzo de’ Medici who invited Poliziano into his home where he continued to write poetry. Between 1475 and 1478, he wrote Stanzas per la Giostra. This poem is about the main character Julio and his love Simonetta. Poliziano’s elegant prose and choice descriptive words paint a picture of how Julio is captivated by Simonetta’s beauty.
