La Nuit is an oil on canvas portraying Nyx in the nude partially covered by a billowing black fabric. She is shown floating above the sea coast accompanied by owls against a starry sky. Bouguereau as a French academic painter and traditionalist, was known for creating modern interpretations of classical subjects and mythological themes, including L'Aurore and Psyche. It is currently located in Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, Washington.
