Research Paper On Killifish

Decent Essays
How would you react if I told you there are fish that have adapted to toxic waste? Shocked, confused, amazed, astounded or curious may be the thought that pops in your head but there are fishes like that and they are located in the waters of New Jersey. In the Lower Passaic River and Newark Bay shellfish and other fishes have adapted to the toxic waste from the manufactured chemicals of DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) or Agent Orange (dangerous toxic chemical used in the U.S Vietnam War) in the water. The Atlantic killifish are a common fish that grow a tolerance for the toxic of New Jersey waters. “The new study found that over just a few decades, distinct populations of killifish independently developed similar genetic adaptations

In the publication, “Genetic Rescue in Isle Royale wolves: genetic analysis and the collapse of the population”, Vucetich and others explore the decline of the benefit of genetic rescue over the years in the Island Royale wolves population. The publication hypothesizes that the genetic rescue event in the Island Royale wolves was not successful due to its long term effects of increased inbreeding of individuals and decline in population size. Genetic rescue events are important since they help to preserve the survival of species. Humans are necessary to assist with gene flow to increase heterozygosity of the gene pool and increase the population sizes since species are going nearly extinct due to human impacts. This study is unique in that…

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is an ecologically and economically valuable species that is found along the Pacific coastlines of Asia and North America. Unfortunately, many Chinook populations have been steadily declining during the last century, primarily due to a variety of human activities. These threats include hydroelectric dams, chemical pollution from planes (Dietrich, et al., 2012), and sound pollution from industry (Halvorsen et al., 2012). North American governments and hatcheries have implemented a variety of intervention measures to help restore this species, but the salmon are still struggling to recover in certain parts of their range. As a result, salmon-dependent marine organisms, especially the endangered Southern…

Evolution is a necessity in our world. Organisms need to be able to adapt to their surroundings in order to survive, but it is sad to see that certain organisms have to evolve to survive in polluted areas, such as the Atlantic Killifish. According to JoAnna Klein, “Starting in the late 1990s, researchers became aware that the fish was tolerant of the toxic waters at the Lower Passaic Superfund Site.” Organisms should not have to adapt to polluted environments. In New Jersey, the law states that people can not eat the fish found in this area.…

Gould and Lewontin argue that the adaptationist programme is a narrow view of evolution and should be expanded to incorporate other explanations. They claim that one of the key adaptationist arguments is “if one adaptive program fails, try another” (Gould & Lewontin 586). In this way, evolutionary biology focuses exclusively on researching and publishing material on adaptation. They propose that scientists should instead explore other avenues of discovery that may lead to alternative explanations, explanations that they overlooked by narrowly focusing on adaptation. Adaptationists typically claim that a trait has evolved because it is fit to the environment, whereas Gould and Lewontin argue that perhaps these traits are simply byproducts similar…

Native species are species that have evolved to in a particular region over a long period of time, and have adapted to live in that region’s climate and habitat. Non native species on the other hand, are species that are introduced to an area they're not used to by humans, either by accident, or intentionally (getthegreen). Invasive species are a type of non native species, that are very likely to cause harm to the ecosystem (NOAA). They destroy the habitat of other species, and eventually kill plants, and/or other species.…

In California we all know how the Monterey Bay was a major fish canning area, made famous by Steinbeck’s famous book Cannery Row. But now it is a tourist site with a major aquarium, but not a major source of fish to feed people. Many other areas have seen their fish populations evaporate including the North Seas, Grand Bans, East China Seas, Peruvian Coast, cod fisheries off Newfoundland, sole fisheries in the Irish Seas and English Channel and elsewhere. Ocean fishing fleets have had to go deeper into the water to find fish, but deep water fish are often particularly vulnerable. For instance, the orange roughy can live to 149 years, but it cannot reproduce until between 30 and 40 years.…
