In March of 1781, William Herschel found an irregularity while studying the stars. At first he believed it was a star, but it was moving. Then he believed it was a comet. It was an accidental discovery that due to the unknown origins of it helped lead to a greater motivation to learn as much as they could about it. Herschel, along with the help of many other scientists in his field, spent countless out hours and months studying the measurements, paths, and movements of this ‘comet’.…
Will sponsors in Intelligent Design be able to embrace the promising and innovative solutions outlined in Luke Bawazer’s Tedtalk while rejecting Darwin’s theory? Does the science discussed by Bawazer relate to Bronowski’s belief about science as imaginative and creative? We will find out if this bond between James Bronowski his notion of the nature of scientific reasoning and Luke Bawazer comparing to Edward Wilsons theory of intelligent evolution. Jacob Bronowski (2012) writes about Copernicus’s route to enlightenment as an obscure theorist challenging the common science of his time, his first stage was his mind to raise him from the planet, and put him enthusiastically, theoretically into the sun. This action signifies the start of…
Zeus and Jupiter are the king of the gods in Greek mythology and Roman mythology respectively; they protect mankind and help them when called upon. Although they are the king gods, they are also the god of the sky and thunder who uses lightning as their main weapon and used an eagle to retrieve the lightning bolt. Zeus and Jupiter are both married to their sisters Hera and Juno respectively and have many children from different women. Although the names of the gods in Greek mythology differ from the names in Roman mythology, they perform similar tasks. Zeus, the god of gods in Greek mythology is the most famous.…
It has been a common understanding that Tycho Brahe’s observations of the great star and observation of the great comet played a significant feat in the Copernican Revolution and was especially instrumental in disintegrating the old Aristotelian cosmography. Tycho’s observation of the new star in 1572 directly challenged Aristotle’s immutable and perfect heaven, while his measurements of the comets in 1577 countered the existence of celestial spheres. However, this generalization of Tycho’s work seems rather simplified. Certainly, Tycho’s observation paved way for the new cosmography, but historians have argued the extent and ways in which Tycho’s influences span. In my research, I will explore the ramifications of Tycho’s observation by examining…
Hayy developed a cosmology to portray how he understood the world through the use of observation, speculation, and comparison, without it he would have never discovered how interconnected the universe was. Hayy understands the world in a way that is similar to Copernicus and the rest of previous scientists. His theory of the world stemmed from developments that took place over 28 years in seven-year increments (Ibn Ṭufayl 1150, pg. 128). Hayy understood the world through the basis of the four elements including water, earth, air, and fire. His understanding of the four elements was that they could destroy the other.…
The search for viable planets and moons for NASA to colonize may be narrowed to one. The Jupiter moon Europa may be next on the mission list for NASA astronauts. Leaving Mars out in the cold. Recent research from NASA scientists could have found the life sustaining evidence they need on Europa. Or at least under its icy surface.…
Discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781 William Herschel was born November of 1738, in Germany. As he grew up, he loved music and played in a band. In 1759 he moved with his family to Great Britain. In Great Britain, he taught music and became an organist.…
Many scientists, starting with Galileo, had noticed there was something strange because of a small fleck they saw in the sky. These scientists had try to discover something new, but each time, their ideas were dismissed. This went on for several years, before William Herschel had the motivation to figure it out for himself. At first, he thought it was a comet, but through a mirror he had built, was able to verify that this object wasn’t making the same motion as a comet would. This is where his motivation began.…
Galileo Galilei, a man known for greatly improving the telescope, discovering Jupiter’s four moons, and being the guy who experimented with falling objects at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Born on February 15th of 1564 in Pisa, Italy, Galileo was the first child of Vicenzo Galilei and Guilia Ammannati. Galileo started going to school at the Camaldolese Monastery at Vallombrosa when he and his family moved to Florence in 1574. For college, Galileo went to the University of Pisa to study medicine, but he had to leave before he got his degree due to financial difficulties. Eventually, Galileo was able to get back to the university, but as a teacher.…
Vulcan the mysterious planet said to have messed up most scientific findings. Vulcan was a planet made up to fill the gap in unequal Scientific findings. Urbain Le Vernier, a mathematician in 1840, was very interested in the Unusual Way, Mercury orbited the sun. He decided to look into it further, and using Isaac Newton’s theory of gravitation, he was able to calculate the orbit of mercury. He then compared his results to the actual real motion of mercury and they did not add up.…
His included, determining Earth’s distance to the Sun, the motion of stars and predicting the orbit of the comet that was then unnamed but now known as Halley’s comet. Without Newton’s laws, Halley would have not been able to predict the orbit of this comet. During this time, Halley was researching and came to the realization that fixed stars were not fixed at all. He concluded with all the research he found, fixed stars have a proper…
Jupiter Jupiter is often referred to as “Gas Giant” due to it being the largest planet in the solar system as well as its composition of primarily hydrogen and carbon. The planet has an average temperature of -145 degrees Celsius. Its full name of Jupiter comes from the king of the Roman gods. Galileo Galilei discovered Jupiter along with its four largest moons on January 4th 1609. The planet’s iconic red, white, brown, and yellow stripes are due to regional changes.…
“The Selfish Gene:” a paradigmatic novel in which Richard Dawkins describes evolution in terms of the gene and ultimately depicts the fitness that is maximized by organismal beings on the genetic level. Similarly to the gene, Dawkins implements the term “meme” in his description of societal evolution regarding the spread of ideas throughout civilization. As stated by Scott Atran, a meme is “an element of culture that may be considered to be passed on by non-genetic means, especially imitation.” Memes begin as ideas and continue to spread when those ideas become communicable. Those concepts then continue to proliferate by eliciting thoughts in other human minds, thus causing those notions to flourish in the behavior they inspire.…
One painting that really caught my eye is the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Getlein, 2016). This painting was inspired from Homer’s Iliad, “The Greek epic of the Trojan War (Getlein, 2016).” Without knowing what it really means you can tell more or less what is happening based off of the artists creativity. From first sight, you can see A man sitting in a throne which depicts royalty.…
From the biggest cities to the smallest of molecules, the earth and its dynamics have been widely studied over the span of human history. Bright individuals have made astounding discoveries that has allowed the human race to come closer to finding an answer explaining the forces at work around them. Starting from the early days of the Grecian empire with Aristotle and Plato to the challenging ideals of Newton and Copernicus, science has been completely redefined and continues to grow as a result. Thomas Kuhn described particular scientific events, such as the transition from Aristotelian to Newtonian physics, as a paradigm shift that is realized when questioning the flaws of the then understood subject. The paradigm shift can be viewed…
