During this time period, frozen foods and other convenience items were very popular in the United States (Abrams Mastering). In the 1950s, people did not want to take time to make fancy foods. The people just wanted to make foods that were simple to construct and easy to make. Julia felt as though society could make better foods from scratch and set out to make her cookbook modified so that the average person could make them. Society then benefited because people had better food to eat. Another challenge that Julia faced when constructing her cookbook was finding a way to build the bridge between French and American cooking (Abrams Mastering). Julia found a way to build that bridge and revolutionize American cooking in the process. In her cookbook she gave American households the tools and skills needed to last a lifetime. These techniques and skills are still used by cooks and chefs in today’s society. Abrams also mentioned in his book about Julia child, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, that Child had to adapt her recipes to appeal to American tastes while still incorporating French culture. Julia found a way to almost secretly incorporate French cooking into the recipes in her book. In the sketch a comedian, while dressed like Child, cut off his hand and then continued on with his “cooking show” like nothing had happened as Child often did; to the less extreme (Abrams “Icon”). After this scene aired on television people did not expect Julia Child to make an impact on society because she was seen as “joke”. They assumed that just because she was klutzy she did not know what she was doing and was unqualified to do the job. What these audience members did not know was that Child loved the joke and saw it as motivation for her. She accepted her flaws and always wanted to improve and become better. Her determined attitude made a lasting impact on society because she showed that even though she was liked by millions and was a qualified cooking show host, she still had areas to improve upon in her line of work.
