Research Paper On John Nash

John Nash is now a well-known mathematician. He is commonly recognized as the only mathematician to win the Nobel Prize and as the mathematician that the movie A Beautiful Mind is based on. While people are now aware of John Nash’s story, it was not previously well known. John Nash grew into a brilliant mathematician, was diagnosed with schizophrenia, and persevered through obstacles to continue working in mathematics. John Nash was born on June 13, 1928 in Bluefield, West Virginia where he grew up (People). John’s father, John Forbes Nash, was from Texas and became an electrical engineer (O’Connor). He served in World War I, lectured at the University of Texas, and then moved to Bluefield to work for the Appalachian Power Company. It was …show more content…
While he was in college, Nash was called out of the ordinary, lonely, was pranked by many fellow students, awkward, and immature (O’Connor). At MIT, Nash was not liked by his colleagues, but they worked with him because he was so successful mathematically (People). Nash was also working with RAND, but he was fired because he was arrested for indecent exposure in Santa Monica (John Forbes). While at Princeton, everyone admired his mathematical skill, but his aggressive behavior made his colleagues leery of working with him (O’Connor). Shortly after Alicia became pregnant, New Year’s arrived and with it, the celebrations (O’Connor). There was one party in particular where Nash’s behavior was more than strange. At this party, John showed up in only a diaper and a sash (O’Connor). People from the party claim that Nash spent most of the night laying on his wife’s lap crying and acting like a baby (O’Connor). Soon after this incident, Nash stopped teaching his classes and thought there were messages in the universe that were meant for him alone (O’Connor). Finally, after bizarre behavior, Norbert Wiener found that these actions were tied to a mental diagnosis (O’Connor). John Nash was diagnosed with …show more content…
It is rumored that this is because Alfred Nobel’s wife was having an affair with a mathematician, so out of disdain for the mathematician, he decided that no mathematician could win the Nobel Prize (Hiskey). Regardless of the truth behind that rumor, Nash could not have won the Prize for his work in mathematics. Nash won the Nobel Prize because of his work on game theory for economics (Concise Encyclopedia). Game theory is mainly the study of how two groups of people or how two individuals will interact with each other (Levine). It also describes the interaction based on competition between two groups or individuals (People). Game theory revolutionized economics by claiming that each player in a game would be playing for their own benefit based on other players’ strategy (Cassidy). This was groundbreaking because economics at the time had a concept of how economies as a whole worked based on Keynesian economics, but Nash’s work focused on groups against groups or individuals against each other which Keynesian economics had not accounted for (Cassidy). No one was expecting Nash’s thesis to be as impactful as it was (People). Nash developed his theory of game theory while he was obtaining his doctorate, but he did not win the Nobel Prize until 45 years after he developed it at the age of 66 (O’Connor, People). Thirty-eight years after they divorced, Alicia and John got married again

Nathaniel Hawthrone was raised in Massachusetts during the Puritan era. I think that due to his connection to the Puritan heritage through his ancestors who were Puritans and involved in the Salem witch trials of 1692, he wrote frequently about the 17th century Puritan era in American history to express his negative feelings about the cruelty and injustice of Puritanism that he had observed through his ancestors. Hawthrone was aware of his family's role in colonial America, and through his writing, I feel that he was able to express his opinion about Puritanism and emphasize the religious experiences he had witnessed by writing stories of characters going through life set in that time period. The extreme world view of the Puritan belief of…

It is not clear why exactly Bristow would have wanted to risk everything and ask someone to investigate all over again, but here is my guess: It is true that his family was wealthy, but John Bristow himself was a lawyer in a law firm and could not afford to pay Onifade's blackmails. I think he thought his plans were perfect and flawless since the police did not even find out it was him. We found out in the book that Bristow chose strike because he had researched about his mother who had died while some people, including Strike, thought he was murdered. Bristow thought Strike had a blind spot for these types of crimes and would not be able to solve them because he would remember his mother. He paid strike to prove that again do that no matter…

James Sterling died on June 25th, 1992 due to complications during surgery. Opinions on the work of James Sterling differ greatly depending on who one speaks to. Some such as Vittorio Gregotti wrote that "from now on, everything will be more difficult.” While others like Jonathan Meades claim that "His buildings, like their bombastic maker, looked tough but were perpetual invalid, basket cases.” These claims, however, are not unfounded.…

Nowadays, Facebook is being used less as a social media and more as a platform for people to share their opinions on current events. One trending opinion that recently caught my attention was the one widely adopted after Lamar Odom's recent drug overdose. I noticed that this particular celebrity addict gained a good deal of sympathy from the same people that condemn the addicts on our streets and in our jails. The only difference between between the two is socioeconomic status. So why do people like Lamar Odom get national news coverage, and in some cases, get put on a reality show like Celebrity Rehab, whereas the rest of the population gets neglectful jail sentences?…

John Stuart Mill argues that when he is focused on a goal other than his own happiness, such as to other people’s happiness, on improving mankind, on pursuit of art, or other pursuit, then he finds happiness along the way. He feels that enjoyments in life become pleasant when they are enjoyed in passing and not made a principal pursuit. If you have pursuing happiness your main goal, Mill theorizes that your happiness is not achieved, but instead it becomes inadequate. Thus, Mill contends that you should not treat your happiness as your purpose of life. Treat a goal outside of happiness as your purpose of life.…
