Terry Mort, the author of Thieves’ Road: The Black Hills Betrayal And Custer’s Path To Little Bighorn, was born in Poland, Ohio, where he then shortly moved to Morristown, New Jersey. It was in this town that his fascination of United States history began; stemming from the close proximity of the Jacob Ford Mansion, as well as the abundance of Civil War monuments littering the town. Throughout his primary schooling, Mort credited many books given to him during this time as inspiration for his motivation to pursue writing as his career- most notably, Robert McCloskey’s Homer Price, and Palmer Cox’s Brownie Book. After high school, Mort went on to earn his Master’s degree in literature from both Princeton University and the University of Michigan.…

“George Washington’s Secret Six”, by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger Set in the early stages of the Revolutionary War, “George Washington’s Secret Six” uncovers the clandestine operations of men and women who were tasked with infiltrating the British and delivering secrets back to revolutionary leaders. Washington understood early on that the war would not be one by brute force and direct attacks against the British. His army was ill-trained, ill-equipped and less organized than the British forces. Most of his army were comprised of volunteers with little to no military training. Gen. Washington’s mission was to maintain control of the New york area, with its waterways and harbors that served as a critical port for resupplying his troops.…

Nathaniel Hawthrone was raised in Massachusetts during the Puritan era. I think that due to his connection to the Puritan heritage through his ancestors who were Puritans and involved in the Salem witch trials of 1692, he wrote frequently about the 17th century Puritan era in American history to express his negative feelings about the cruelty and injustice of Puritanism that he had observed through his ancestors. Hawthrone was aware of his family's role in colonial America, and through his writing, I feel that he was able to express his opinion about Puritanism and emphasize the religious experiences he had witnessed by writing stories of characters going through life set in that time period. The extreme world view of the Puritan belief of…

His mother gave him an emphasis on education, hard work, and church. In addition, she always encouraged him and her other children to be self-sufficient, as she had raised all of them mostly by herself. She opened the doors for James to look into his Jewish side when she revealed to him the facts of her life (McBride, pg. 269). James created his own resources, which included, staying away from the color boundary (McBride, pg. 262), expressing himself by writing books and composing/playing music (McBride, pg. 266), and by traveling (looking into his mother’s past). James background had a huge impact on his life even if he didn’t know it until later because he had been raised somewhat like his mother…
Comparison of “The Most Dangerous Game” and the “Young Goodman Brown” This essay will compare two short stories: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown and Richard Connell’s The Most Dangerous Game. Works do not have similarities at the first sight. Stories are about a century apart (were published in 1835 and 1924 respectively), have different plots, types of characters and conclusions. However, it is possible to make a comparison and find both similarities and differences in these stories. Events in the Young Goodman Brown took place in 17th century.…
