Malala’s father believed in education so much so that he started a school to educate girls and boys. The leader of the Taliban, Maulana Fazlullah, started off with an illegal radio station so that he come off as a good person and took advantage of people’s ignorance so they would join forces with him. He convinced people to get rid of their television and they could only listen to Taliban music. People were becoming brainwashed by him that they would do anything for him. He would commend a girl who left school and would say negative things about the girls who stayed. There were public whippings as punishment for people who disobeyed any of his orders. The Taliban were killing police officers who did not hand over their guns and the authorities did nothing to stop them. They would dump bodies with notes to what they had done in the square at nighttime so the next morning people could see them and be afraid to disobey his orders. They told girls that they needed to be veiled and covered. They were controlling everything and everyone and were succeeding because no one could speak out against them unless they wanted to die. I still can’t imagine how one person could be allowed to be this powerful and control these villages and the government could not stop him. I admire how Malala felt “if one man, Fazlullah, can destroy everything, why can’t one girl change it?” This was such a powerful statement because she is acting on behalf of everyone who was afraid to speak up. She was able to stand up for what she believed in and wasn’t going to give up like everyone else had.
