Honduras Flag Project Essay

The country of Honduras is one of the many places that speaks Spanish. The name of the country means “depths,” and it was named by Christopher Columbus during his fourth voyage. Columbus named it Honduras because of the deep waters at the mouth of the Sico Tinto Negro River off the Mosquito Coast. The nation has an area of 43,266 miles, and is in the middle of Central America. Honduras is a very interesting, and important country!

The national flag of Honduras consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue (top), white (center), and blue (bottom), with five pointed stars arranged in an X pattern centered in the middle of the white band. The two blue stripes symbolize the Pacific Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. The white stripe represents the land between the two bodies of water, and the peace and prosperity of its people. The five blue stars represent the original five member nations of the Federal Republic of Central America (present day Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.) As you can tell, the Honduras flag has a lot of meaning built into it.

Honduras flag etiquette is very strict, and it is essential that flag rules are followed correctly. The Honduras flag should never be flown above another national flag on the same staff. The Honduras flag should never be allowed to drag along the ground. A faded or tattered flag of Honduras should be removed, and replaced with a new flag. A flag of Honduras, when in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning in private with all care and respect.
