High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

The 45th annual BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl features two of college football’s top traditional powers. On New Years Day, the Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will battle in sunny Glendale, Ariz. Ohio State The Buckeyes saw their College Football Playoff hopes disappear when Michigan State Spartans kicker Michael Geiger hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired in the Horseshoe on Nov. 21. Despite the fact Urban Meyer's team would no longer hold a top four ranking, the loss to Michigan State may have been the best thing that happened to Ohio State this season. Dealing with adversity is the only way to grow as a team, a notion implied by University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh as he once referenced a quote from “The Lion King”: "The past can hurt.…

Actions define consequences is ethical. In the cartoon “Mascots” it virtuously shows the truth about school mascots. In the Excerpt “Lather and Nothing Else” consequentially the barber could have murdered the general but chose not to due to his morals. In the song “Independence Day” deontologically a mother protects her daughter from an abusive relationship. To begin, High schools should be able to use Indians or Native Americans as a mascot because virtuously it isn’t being used in a disrespectful way, but in a more respectful way.…

Big noses, tomahawks, war paint, feathered headdresses: these are the types of things people think of when they hear that a school or sports team has a Native American mascot. These representations, although many people do not believe it, are racist. My high school’s mascot happens to be the chieftain and up until my senior year, it was represented as a characterized head of an indigenous person. Many students in the school fought to, as they put it, “save the chieftain,” failing to see that using a native person as a mascot is not honoring their culture. This issue is not confined to my school, recently in the media there has been a debate on whether or not the Washington Redskins must change their offensive name and logo.…
