An aspect of the 1970s feminist movement, the feminist art movement created a voice for women in the art world. A large part of this art movement was recreating the image of the woman in artwork. Female artists represented their nude or clothed bodies as a form of bodily autonomy, rather than as objectification. Similarly, Frey’s Pink Lady works to represent the semi-nude female body in an alternative representation of women. Taking merely the alternate form of the female figure a step further, Frey also tells a story with her artwork.…
The Weimar Republic was a period of cultural creativity amongst the environment of hyper-inflation and depression, but Berlin drew the talent and energies of the rest of Germany towards its enticing cabaret performances and sex tourism. This cultural creativity included a newly liberated female population in which films began to present their female characters in sexual ways. The whole period of the Weimar Republic was a time of sexual liberation. My research question for my paper is, how did sexuality during the Weimar Republic effect women? To answer this question I will discuss gender roles, the new women era, cinema, and night life which were aspects that had a huge influence on women at the time.…

With her art operating as a means to appropriate the female figure in a different way, here Saville aims to criticise male fantasy and show the strength and power of being a woman alone, a critique even stating that “She has recalled the tensions of vulnerability, strength and power evident within the figure’s posture, the low-viewing point which suggests reflexive self-examination and appraisal” . The piece, displaying a large nude, portrays a woman looking down at the viewer and underneath her gaze, the woman’s body calls upon a representation of beauty that does not fit into a patriarchal mould of flawlessness. This is further emphasised through the lines that circle what the woman would consider her “problem areas” or “flaws”, the dark…
Hist/Wmns 313 1. I thought the reading by Walker-Bynum was very interesting. I have never thought of the idea that Christ could be seen as female. I learned a lot of reasons as to why people thought they saw the body of Christ as female. It surprised me that people thought it because most people always see Christ as a man just because men seem to have more power and a bigger part in history in general.…

The first piece that I’m going to discuss is “The kiss” by Klimt. I’m so moved by this painting not for the depiction itself but for the technique and time that he used. This is perhaps Klimt's most popular and notorious artwork of sexual love. The kiss is a very dynamic and distinctive piece in that you can clearly tell that the man and woman are in some form of love (or maybe they are just friends). The man that alone makes the piece is holding the woman so closely and lovingly.…
Gender is a social and cultural conception of being male or female. The presentation of gender in art often depicts the divide between the social and sexual identification of being masculine and feminine. The roles of males and females have been contested throughout history and has been prominent subject of experimentation in the arts. Although contemporary artworks play a crucial role in advancing the equality of women in society, artworks, especially that of Gustav Klimt, in the past have portrayed women within a constrained niche. Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter that lived during the late 17th century and the early 18th century.…
