Bang! Boom! The sounds of gunshots and were heard in every single war around the globe. But what fueled the guns? Gunpowder is one of the many Chinese inventions, such as silk, chopsticks, the compass, and the umbrella. It is an explosive made out of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal and has a blackish color. Gunpowder is the first explosive ever invented that was physical in the world. It is considered as one of China’s four greatest inventions. The Chinese used charcoal as a fuel by cooking wood. As an oxidizer, they used potassium nitrate from decayed animal manure, and sulfur was found in volcanic regions. These ingredients combined took form of a black powder. When it is lit in a confined space, most of the powder burns. As a result, hot gas and heat are released into the air under great pressure, causing the powder to explode. On the other hand, when the gunpowder is not in a confined space, it will simply burn.
