“Up, up,” My sister calls as she pats the brown leather seat of my mom’s car. My dog is coming with us to the beach, a rare occasion, for Guinness isn’t the most trained of dogs. We are going to the Nob, a secluded beach on the edge of Woods Hole, perfect for a morning trip and a private swim. As Guinness jumps onto the Captain’s chair, he rustles the rocks of our driveway, a new addition to our summer home. My brothers and sisters are already in the car, waiting with their bathing suits on, and loads of sunscreen. As Lauren shuts the door, Guinness wags his tail, knocking over a water bottle and a bottle of sunscreen in his happy warpath. After leaving Guinness in the car to grab pastries from Pie in the Sky, we are on our way to the beach just outside of the town square. “Stop Brendan, I …show more content…
He tries to get on the ladder, slipping as he tries to stabilize himself with the thick metal steps. Brendan jumps into the water and entertains Guinness, but remains at a distance, for Guinness is not the most graceful swimmer. He will swim in the ocean, and even pull himself onto the lilypad, but Guinness is not an olympian. He opens his mouth a bit too wide, so he swallows water when he breathes, and scratches when in doggy paddle, leaving little pink scratches on our sunburnt legs. But Brendan knows Guinness well and trails him to shore, picking up a tennis ball as it gets caught with the small, rippling waves of the harbor. If you are a lucky enough kid to grow up with a dog, you know just how much a puppy can matter in your life. With a wagging tail and a happy grin, I know that Guinness will always be by my side. Charcoal fur and amber eyes, he is always so photogenic, he runs and plays with endless energy, and sleeps on the living room ottoman. He only barks for other dogs and jumps when he is going nuts, but he is my dog and I love him more for

Lisa McGirr’s book, The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State, argues that alcohol was a major part of the New Deal and previous scholarship concerning alcohol has marginalized the subject or emphasized the failure of Prohibition. Contrary to this scholarship, McGirr claims the opposite, “that beer took its place in the vanguard of New Deal measures” (xiii). Referring to the title of her book, McGirr convincingly proves that the war on alcohol was waged on African Americans, the immigrant population, and against poor white communities, most notably seen through the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan. While Prohibition was significant in leading to the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the very discrimination that…

Predating the 1920s, women predominantly led the prohibition movement in America; however, after the passage of the eighteenth amendment, the movement faced abnormal opposition so the government passed the 21st amendment, which repealed the eighteenth amendment. In the late 1800s, some women, such as Carrie Nation, opposed the notorious saloons that were known for their high alcohol consumption and violence rates. As a result, some women formed the Anti-Saloon League, which pushed for the abolition of saloons and it paved the way for the imminent prohibition movement. For example, women had views, such as, “alcohol was the main source of evil power creating nothing but pauperism, crime, madness and death” (Events Leading up to Prohibition).…

The anti-German sentiment was the main reason during the First World War because Germans were known for their brewing their own alcohol. In 1919 Prohibition became the law of the land with the Eighteenth Amendment which prohibited manufacturing, selling, or transport of any intoxicating liquors within the United States. Prohibition was difficult to enforce because it required a high degree of cooperation from citizens and many parts of the country citizens would not cooperate. After Congress passed the Volstead Act of 1919 which detailed the strict punishments for violating the Eighteenth Amendment it would still not deter citizens.…
