Walking through the streets of big cities like San Francisco, New York, and London, it is not uncommon to come across graffiti. From tagged walls to colorful and well-thought-out murals, there is a variety of images displayed on the concrete or brick that holds the structure of the city. Though commonly conceived as vandalism, that is not always the case with graffiti. Some artist have a purpose for their urban artwork. Some may use it as a way to inspire or share an idea important to them. Scrolling past images on the internet, turning pages of a popular magazine, or maybe flipping through the channels on a TV, it is almost certain the average person has seen a piece by renowned and elusive street artist, Banksy. Through his political or social commentary superficially simple work plastered against the grime of big city walls attracts onlookers with just a single glance. At first sight, you see a little girl painted black and white with her red balloon against a gray brick wall. The image takes on a playful and youthful message when first looked at. Then taking a closer look, the girl’s face and the front of her dress are white as if illuminated by the sun. Wind is blowing against her back, whipping her short hair in her face. Her right arm is reaching in front of her, stretching toward a red, heart-shaped balloon. She looks as if she is longing for something more.
